The following simple steps could make a real difference in the workplace:
Energy Fact: On average, in the UK, organisations waste up to 20% of the energy they buy.
- Turn down the heating by just 1 degree - it could potentially mean a saving of 8-10% on your annual heating bill and would give you enough energy to print over 40 million sheets of A4 paper.
- Make use of natural daylight where possible. It costs nothing and can reduce lighting bills by up to 19%.
- Update your light bulbs to energy saving ones - they use 75% less electricity than standard light bulbs, provide the same amount of light, and last up to 10 times longer.
- Encourage staff to turn off lights whenever and wherever they are not needed. Businesses can save up to 15% on their bills by implementing this simple measure.
- A computer left on 24/7 will cost around £25 a year, but if switched off at night and at weekends, this can be reduced to around £7 a year and save an equivalent amount of energy to make over 21,000 cups of coffee.
- Monitors can account for almost two-thirds of a computer's energy use, so always switch them off when not in use.
